I am an Associate Professor of Fluid Mechanics at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of Sapienza University of Rome, where I also received my Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in 2010.
My research addresses the physics and control of compressible turbulent flows through high-fidelity simulations (DNS and LES): high-speed boundary layers, shock-wave/boundary-layer interactions, rough-wall and heat-transfer effects, passive and active flow control, aeroacoustics of space launchers, rocket nozzles and solid rocket motors, and high-performance computing on GPUs. I lead the development of STREAmS, an open-source GPU-accelerated solver for the direct numerical simulation of compressible turbulence, adopted by research groups worldwide and run on Europe's largest supercomputers. I take part in the Italian National Centre for HPC (ICSC) and I am the national PI of the PRIN project ADMIRE on Mars-entry aerodynamics.
In 2014 I was awarded a SIR grant by the Italian Ministry of Education, a programme supporting the scientific independence of young researchers. My work has been recognised with the CEAS/AIDAA Best Paper Award in Fluid Dynamics (2025), the APS/DFD Gallery of Fluid Motion Award (2022) and the AIAA Solid Rockets Best Paper Award (2021), and I have been listed among Stanford University's World's Top 2% Scientists since 2022. I have authored more than 80 papers in international peer-reviewed journals (Google Scholar, August 2026: 5,400+ citations, h-index 40).
